WORKSHOP
ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AT THE SET
LAST MEETING
OF MASTER´S DEGREE PROGRAM
SET VISITED
BY FRENCH AMBASSADOR
SIGNING
OF COLLABORATION AGREEMENT
On
May 9 and
In the course of this
workshop different self-financed community projects were presented by church
communities from different parts of the country. These communities worked on
the projects using scant resources.
The workshop was aimed at
providing the church communities with opportunities to exchange experience on their
projects, so that they could learn how to carry them out.
Two of the community
leaders described to us the work they do:
Miriam
Naranjo. Presbyterian pastor in Taguasco, Santi Spiritus.
“For the last three years
our community has worked with people with AIDS. This work, which has been done
in conjunction with the ministry of public health of our municipality, is aimed
at
promoting
comprehensive health as well as preventing the disease, thus creating safe
communities. In order to achieve these goals a meeting place was created in
order that AIDS sufferers and the rest of the community could talk openly about
their dreams, life projects and problems. Food and pastoral support is provided
too.”
“We are also working on
other projects: children under 14 are helped with their education, recreation,
and diet; and workshops on gender are held for the community members to
discuss, from a biblical perspective, issues like violence, self-esteem, and
couple and family relationships. In addition, we do different kinds of work: we
do laundry, keep pigs for meat, and provide horse-carriage transportation. Part
of the profits we make from these activities help guarantees the execution of
the projects.”
“The main objective of
our community projects is to increase human dignity.”
Reverend
Nehemías Cárdenas Morales, President of the Christian Agrarian Fraternity
“Several
projects are carried out by the Christian-Agrarian Fraternity in Villa Clara province:
pig farming and laundry doing in Camajuaní. Pig farming is also done in Tarafa,
where a vegetable garden is taken care of.”
About the workshop
Reverend Cárdenas said: “This workshop has been very enriching. The groups that
attended it could exchange experience and viewpoints, which are varied because
there are geographical, cultural and denominational differences. And this fact
is precisely what has enriched this workshop. It is true that not all of the
projects can be applied to all communities, but there is always something
valuable that can. It was important that not only each representative did
provide a report on the work of their communities, but also because they spoke
about their dreams and aspirations.”
“We are very grateful to
the SET for facilitating the presentation of our projects which are also
responsibility of Church.”
SET VISITED
BY From May 11-17 the SET was visited by Dorcas Gordon, rector of
During their stay at the

As the 2006-2007 academic
year was coming to an end, the third and last meeting of the first year of the
Master’s Degree Program was held at the SET from May 14 to 24. This culminating
meeting was the occasion for the students to present and discuss their thesis
projects. These students come from different denominations, and it is worth
highlighting the fact that for the first time members of the Soldiers of the
Cross have attended this course. The three of them were kind enough to express
their opinions about this course and their stay at the seminary. Below is what
they said:
Cadmiel
Pastor Verdecia Toledano, professor of Christian Evidence at José C. Fabregat
Seminary
“I guess this has been a
top quality course. Our professors were well prepared for their teaching
activity; there was no improvisation at all. I learned lots of new things; it
was a real blessing for me. As a result, my views have changed, I have done
away with my inflexible way of thinking, and now I feel I am more receptive.
The only thing I regret is this intensive course wasn’t long enough for me. If
it had, I would have been able to deepen my understanding of other subjects,
for example, Exegesis, which was so masterfully taught by Professor
Castellanos. And I would have had more time to read the library books. All in
all, studying here has been an edifying new experience. I have met and
fraternized with people with different points of view.”
“Studying here has been
an enriching experience. A wide spectrum of theological knowledge has opened up
to me. It is worth mentioning the emotional support that we have received here
in the seminary; we have been treated with the greatest respect. In practice,
we have felt true ecumenism at the SET; our traditions have been highly
respected, and we have never felt isolated or underestimated but part of the
seminary community. I am very grateful to all the SET workers and in particular
to the professors for being so academically knowledgeable and for teaching us
to the best of their abilities. I hope they continue doing such an excellent
job and keep their academic achievements.”
Alfredo
Michel Suárez Sanfiel, professor of Administration at José
C. Fabregat Seminary
“The high level of academic preparation of the professors and the high
quality of the lessons they teach was what impressed me most from the very
beginning. Therefore I’d like to thank them for this and for so many other
things, including their support. These studies have encouraged me to do my best
in my training. On the whole, I have enjoyed a pleasant atmosphere and an
excellent treatment at the SET.”
