3-5 November, in our institution, the workshop “A meeting with Social Projects Facilitators” took place. It was organized by the Christian Institute of Studies on Gender, directed by Ofelia Ortega Suarez and coordinated by Moraima González, responsible of the social projects; and supported by DM Exchange in Mission Organization of the Reformed Churches of Switzerland, represented by Mrs Nancy Carrasco and Ana Gatman.

Master Dayma Echevarria Leon from the Cuban Economy Studies Center of the University of Havana, presented the paper “To give or to teach fishing? some challenges for developing projects,” which led the leaders of the projects to a reflection. They have been developing their skills with the help of the Seminary and the Christian Institute of Studies on Gender”.

This event was a wonderful exchange of experiences for the 20 participants from the Episcopalian, Reformed-Presbyterian, the Friends “Quakers”, the Agrarian Christian Brotherhood, United of Canada and Reformed of Switzerland churches. The Association of farmers of Cuba (ANAP) was also present.

Especially interesting were the presentations of experiences by the Agrarian Christian Brotherhood of their project at Tarafa; the project of the Episcopalian Church at Cuatro Caminos (Crossroad), Los Arabos and Zorrilla in Matanzas province; and by the Friend “Quakers” in Holguin. The one by the Reformed-Presbyterian Church in Taguasco. This event is coordinated by Ileana Hernandez and Rafael Ribot of the oral story-telling group of Matanzas and it is supported by the subsidiary of Literature of the National Union of Artists and Writers (UNEAC).

This fourth edition is dedicated to the Canary Islands, because of its presence in the city traditions and the individual character. On November 9th, Cuban and foreign story-tellers delighted the audience with legends and short-stories animated by those present themselves.

“Always, we have a compulsory visit to the SET -said Ileana Hernandez- besides the kindly welcoming, the surrounding beauty and the friendship links. This festival is a way to promote the reading. We make people know the rich national literature.”

MARKING THE 137 ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXECUTION BY FIRING SQUAD OF 8 MEDICINE STUDENTS

On the occasion of the 137 anniversary of the execution of the 8 Medicine students, professors and students of the SET went to Havana to offer a flower gift at their Monument at La Punta level ground.

This day, in 1871, in twos, on their backs, blindfolded were executed eight Medicine students, all non-guilty and none older than 21. They were accused to have desecrated the Spanish reactionary journalist Gonzalo de Castañon´s tomb. This happening became a political crime, as the patriot Carlos Manuel de Cespedes said. The colonial government wanted to silence the rebel spirit of the Cuban youth.

INTERVIEW TO DR.DORCAS GORDON, CANADIAN THEOLOGIAN

Dorcas Gordon –a great friend of the SET- Director and a professor of Hermeneutic and Preach at the Knox College, in Toronto, Canada, was invited to participate at the Interseminary Meeting and also to teach a course at the Mastery Program, all November long.

“For one of the reason I am here –Dorcas said- is due to accompaniment between this Seminary and mine since 2001. An aspect of this relationship consists of fostering the possibility our students could come and know this place and been taught by your professors”.

About her participation in the Interseminay Meeting, dealing with the theological studies in Latin American and Caribbean Schools, she said, “I wanted to come for having America included –the United States and Canada- because all the challenges of these schools and ours are the same. It does not matter where they are: basically, the task is to make the student. It is ready for the ministry”.

“An aspect I realized in this lecture and I would like to remark is that they are doing a more practical theological education: at the seminaries, a combination of theory and practice is needed”.

“Another important aspect was to meet each other better and to strengthen the relationships. Each time we meet frace to face is worthier”.

Referring to course she taught, she said: “it is basically important to expose the students to different methods for approaching the Bible; The method I taught is one developing in Europe,

So it is necessary to have a look to the biblical interpretation methods which other people, in other countries develop.  In my opinion, the feminist interpretations are other kind of interpretation. I teach the subject, however the students become teachers of these methods and this helps them in their interpretations. I have students in other countries”, she added.

“Always I come to Cuba, I learn a lot. It is enriching for my own teaching process. When one is out of context, one can have a better understanding of all”.
