RENEWS THE
PRESBYTERIAN-REFORMED CHURCH IN CUBA UNDER THE SLOGAN OF “PREPARING FOR THE
CO-MISSION”
Under the slogan “Preparing for the co-mission” a new Synod of the
Presbyterian Reformed Church in Cuba initiated its activities, in sessions held
at the temple of the First Presbyterian Church of Havana, on March 2nd and 3rd,
2007.
The Pastoral Body and commissioners from all presbyteries shared together
in a Eucharistic celebration, which reaffirmed the unity of the Church, and in
deliberations and agreements for the promotion of the mission that the
Presbyterian Reformed community must embody in our society. A vigorous and deep
reflection was provoked by the study of the biblical text chosen for the year,
Matthew 28,16-20, which established the biblical theological basis that must
uphold our understanding and practice of the task to which Jesus Christ commits
all his followers in order to give continuity and validity to His ministry of
liberation and justice.
In an attitude of solidarity with the Cuban Presbyterian family in this
meeting, delegates were present from the United Reformed Church of the United
Kingdom (Synod of Scotland), the Presbyterian Church in the United States of
America (PCUSA), Sinodo Presbiteriano Boriquen (Puerto Rico), the Presbyterian
Church in Korea (South Korea), the Reformed Church in the Netherlands, the Cuban
Council of Churches, the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Matanzas, and the
Bible Society of Cuba.
On this occasion elections were celebrated to renew the leadership of the
Church, a mandate that fell to the Rev. Daniel Izquierdo Hernández, MODERATOR;
the Rev. Ofelia Ortega Suárez, VICE-MODERATOR; the Rev. Francisco Marrero
Gutiérrez, GENERAL SECRETARY; the Rev. Mirielys Negrín Navia, ASSOCIATED
SECRETARY; and the elder Lázaro López Lima, GENERAL TREASURER, who are
accompanied by a valuable group of
leaders in the performance of other important responsibilities.
The Church, with renewed optimism, is beginning a new period, trusting in
the sure guidance of the Holy Spirit and the committed cooperation of all its
parishioners.
